Join Washington Revels Jubilee Voices at the Opening Ceremonies for this annual program celebrating the “Lion of Anacostia,” Frederick Douglass. The celebration includes music by the Jubilee Voices and D.C. Strings, performances by the student winners of the Frederick Douglass Oratorical Contest and a light-hearted debate-style program. The Opening Ceremony begins at 2 p.m. (doors open early at 12:30 p.m.).

Washington Revels Jubilee Voices performs its third concert for the Black History Program at Historic Pleasant Grove Church, built by the descendants of enslaved people in the 1890s. Experience the traditional music that bound together many African American congregations in the late-19th and early-20th Centuries, with songs of faith & freedom, struggle & perseverance. The program concludes with refreshments and social time for performers and audience to meet and mingle.
