Jubilee Voices will visit the City of Greenbelt for a community commemoration of Maryland Emancipation Day, November 1, 1864, when slavery was abolished by a constitutional amendment.
As part of the event, Jubilee Voices will present the history of “jubilee songs,” music that originated as spirituals sung by enslaved African Americans. These songs, which spoke of struggle, deliverance, and freedom, were made popular by groups like the Fisk University Jubilee Singers in the late 1800s.
The program also features performances by:
- The Voices for Peace
- Osaze Murray, the 2026 Prince George’s County Youth Poet Laureate.
