On Saturday, August 23, enjoy the lush music and riveting story of Porgy and Bess at Opera in the Outfield at Nationals Park! The event, hosted by Washington National Opera and the Kennedy Center, offers a free, family-friendly opera broadcast as the centerpiece of an evening of fun for all ages. Limited free seating is available on the outfield grass—or head to the ballpark stands for plenty of seating. Jubilee Voices will be featured as one of the local artists performing before the broadcast, singing songs from the Georgia Sea Islands—reflecting the Gullah Geechee culture of the opera’s fictional “Catfish Row.”
The August 23 performance will draw from a 2023 collaboration between Jubilee Voices and Mercer University that resulted in a concert on St. Simons Island, Georgia, that blended film, music, and education about the island’s Gullah Geechee community. The program was part of the Coastal Georgia Research Initiative, a 10-year partnership between Mercer University’s College of Professional Advancement and the St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition, residents dedicated to preserving their Gullah Geechee heritage and culture.
Join us for history, music and fun in the outfield!
