Scotland’s national “bard” was born on January 25, 1759, and all around the world “Burns suppers” – complete with bagpipes, a special Scottish dish called “haggis,” poetry and song – will be held in his honor. This great poet, collector of folk song in his beloved Scotland, and writer of over 350 of his own songs, is now considered a pioneer in the Romantic movement.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my jo, for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
— “Auld Lang Syne” by Robert Burns
