May 4 – May Revels at the National Cathedral

Welcome spring with Washington Revels as we close the annual All Hallows Guild Flower Mart held at the Washington National Cathedral on May 4 at 4pm. We will process to the front steps of the cathedral (or inside the Cathedral, if there is rain)—dressed in traditional May “whites” with colorful sashes and flower wreathes—to celebrate the greening of the year with song, dance, and merry mumming. The Washington Revels chorus of adults, teens, tweens, and children will be joined by the Whiskey Before Breakfast Band (and friends!), to present a festive celebration of the month of May. We will sing, dance, crown a May monarch, present a Spring mummers’ play, wind the traditional Maypole with colored ribbons, and invite you to join in the fun with sing-alongs (including the Rattlin’ Bog!). This family-friendly event will have you jumping for joy!

The Flower Mart will emerge afresh, vibrant and exciting after its two-year hiatus, to include the famous antique carousel, free entertainment, the International Floral Display, dozens of food and gift vendors, carnival games for the children, an astounding White Elephant Sale, and of course, flower and plant sales. Come early and enjoy the full event, and then get your seat for the 4pm show. All are welcome to this free, family-friendly event!

This year’s Flower Mart theme is “In Bloom” and we all sing a round for peace in celebration of that theme.

Ride the Antique Carousel
All Hallows Guild’s antique carousel is a favorite of the young and young at heart. It dates from around 1890, and is one of only two surviving carousels manufactured by the U.S. Merry-Go-Round Corporation. The carousel was purchased by the Guild in 1963 and we continue to restore and refurbish this historic treasure.
