Join Washington Revels and the Seth Kibel Trio for a fun, family-friendly celebration of the holiday often referred to as “Jewish Halloween”! Be part of our Purim Family Day at the new Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum and enjoy snacks, crafts, costumes, live performances, and more! This event is a celebration for all, including those who have never experienced Purim (or any other Jewish holidays).
Purim is about creating joy and reveling in the silliness of life, and costumes help add to the atmosphere for all. Cross dressing and masks are encouraged. Purim is historically also a day of support and aid, and the disguising of one’s identity allowed people to both request support and give generously without impacting community opinions.
Purim Family Day includes an afternoon of lively Klezmer music by the Seth Kibel Trio (Bob Abbott, Harry Appelman, and Seth Kibel) and a Purim spiel—an interactive, humorous retelling of the story of the megillah (scroll) of Esther, in a contemporary and comedic style featuring Mark Jaster, Danny Pushkin, Jonathan Mulberg, Abbie Mulberg, and Seymour Kankel!
Throughout the afternoon you can visit the costume and selfie station, craft room, and snack bar. The costume and selfie station will have accessories and costume pieces you can add to your looks to add festivity to the event. In the craft room, you can create and decorate a golden crown, choose from a selection of themed coloring projects, and make a grogger (noise maker) to drown out the sound of the villain’s name (Haman) during the Purim spiel (a holiday tradition!)! Visit the snack bar to purchase hamantaschen (triangle-shaped treats) and holiday-themed beverages. And, spend some time exploring the exhibitions in the Museum.
