November 30 – Arab Folk Dance Workshop (for all ages)

Join Washington Revels and 2019 Christmas Revels tradition bearer Karim Nagi for an “Arab Folk Dance Intensive” workshop! In this cultural and artistic experience, you’ll have fun learning new dance steps and, like the villagers in our “Celestial Fools” Revels, you will experience the sense of connection created by sharing traditions across cultures.

Karim will guide us through traditional group dances from the Arab world. These are not “performance” dances, but village community dances done by “The People” — adults and children of all ages — in social, celebratory, and spiritual group settings.

Come and learn:

  • Dabka Line Dance,
  • Basic Tahteeb/Assaya Cane Dance
  • Moroccan Shaabi Dance
  • Khaliji Arabian Peninsula Dance
  • The group-healing ritual motions found in Zikr and Zar practices

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have been given an introduction to each dance style and, if interested, will have the foundation needed to pursue future study.

Take part in this cultural and artistic afternoon!

  • Open to ages 7–adult
  • All levels of dance experience (or no experience!) are welcome.
  • No special footwear required, but no loose sandals.

And join us for Karim’s solo-performance concert on Thursday, December 12!

See Karim Nagi in Action!
