May 22-23 – Christmas Revels Adult Auditions

WHAT: Prepare 2 short audition pieces of your choice without accompaniment.  Please Note: Your selection can be from any era or genre with the exception of “pop” music or show tunes. Traditional songs, carols, folk tunes, hymns, and early vocal works are recommended.

About the Audition Process

The entire audition process takes about 60-90 minutes and includes performing some simple dance steps and singing with others. Please note: The Washington Revels community reflects our larger community; we therefore seek to create a diverse cast consisting of strong performers of all backgrounds and ancestries. Ability to read music helpful but not required. The music is in English.

* Seniors graduating this Spring are eligible to audition for the adult chorus. High school students can audition for the teen chorus. Children grades 3-5 can audition for the children’s chorus. Children and teen auditions will take place on September 11 & 12, 2015 (with Children’s callbacks on September 13).

Production Information

The Christmas Revels 2015
The Christmas Revels is our largest production each year. We select a balanced chorus made up of approximately 40 adult singers. Performing in The Christmas Revels is a large commitment. There is no “standing” chorus for the Christmas production; we audition each cast anew for each show, and value the inclusion of a substantial number of new singers in each ensemble. For this production there are 11 weeks of rehearsals beginning in September (one Wednesday night rehearsal per week, and Saturday and Sunday rehearsals on four additional weekends). There is one initial chorus rehearsal in the spring shortly after auditions. If you also dance or perform a featured role, there may be a few additional rehearsals scheduled, usually on Monday evenings. Tech Week consists of four nights in the theater from 5 to 10-11 p.m.

For our 33rd annual production, we will revel with a beloved king and his court, a mysterious woodlands queen, a pair of fools, and even an unexpected guest. Join our cast of over 100, ages 8–85, as we celebrate the winter solstice in music, dance and drama. Enjoy rousing traditional songs, seasonal carols, stately and spirited tunes on early instruments, familiar rounds, and more–like the eerily hypnotic Abbots Bromley horn dance, a topsy-turvy “Lord of Misrule,” and lively Morris and sword dancing. This production will feature guest artists Piffaro: the Renaissance Band, Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, and Gwen Grastorf.  Eight performances at GW Lisner Auditorium, December 5-6 and 11-13, 2015 (matinees and evenings).
